Cheerleading championships highlight busy sports weekend

Cheerleading squads from Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton, Central Aroostook and Fort Fairfield will meet up for the annual Aroostook League championships, to be held at Caribou High School Friday beginning at 7 p.m.

The competition is always a popular event for fans and both team and individual awards will be up for grabs. Presque Isle is the defending County champion and the Panthers of Mars Hill won last year’s Class D state title.
It will be a quick turnaround for three of those teams as on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., Caribou, Houlton and Presque Isle will also be involved in the Penobscot Valley Conference Class B championships, set for CHS for the first time ever.
Old Town, Ellsworth, John Bapst, Mount Desert Island and Hermon are other schools taking part.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students for both competitions and the doors will open 30 minutes prior to the start.
The first major cheering event was held Saturday in Bar Harbor, with the Big East Conference championships taking place. Presque Isle finished fifth and Caribou was 11th.
There are several other sporting events planned for Saturday. Alpine skiers take to Bigrock in Mars Hill with a scheduled 9 a.m. start time. The Presque Isle hockey team hosts Skowhegan/Lawrence at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, while the Caribou wrestling team is in Ellsworth for a multi-team tournament beginning at noon. Carlisle swimmers are in Old Town for a 6 p.m. meet.
