Van Buren ATV chase ends in arrest of Caribou man

VAN BUREN, Maine — Local police charged Matthew Sands, 34, of Caribou, with multiple violations following a “short pursuit” of an ATV early Friday morning.

Officer Nate Chisholm attempted to stop an ATV on Alexander Road at about 1:30 a.m. Friday, but the driver kept going, according to a statement Van Buren police posted Monday evening on the department’s Facebook page.

Following a short chase, police apprehended Sands behind Marquis Farms and took him into custody, the post states.

Sands was charged with operating after suspension, failure to stop for a law enforcement officer, operating an ATV to endanger, operating an ATV at greater than reasonable and prudent speed, operating an unregistered ATV and two counts of violation of conditions of release, according to the statement.

Sands also had a warrant out for his arrest, but Van Buren police did not provide further details.
