MAPLETON, Maine — Two drivers escaped serious injuries in an early morning crash Monday on Main Street that police say was caused by a pickup truck driver who fell asleep.

Andrew Maynard, 27, of Mapleton was driving a 2008 Ford F-150 westbound on Main Street at about 5:35 a.m. Monday when he fell asleep, according to the Maine State Police.

Maynard crossed the centerline and veered into a 2008 GMC Envoy driven by Valerie Delong, who was driving in the opposite direction near the intersection of Main Street and Pulcifer Road, according to police.

Delong, 61, of Mapleton attempted to avoid the truck as it crossed over into her lane but was struck on the driver’s side of her SUV, according to the police.

Delong was extricated from her vehicle by first responders with the Mapleton Fire Department, but neither she nor Maynard suffered major injuries and neither was transported to a hospital, according to the police.
