CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou VFW Auxiliary held its annual coloring contest in November, with 71 second-grade students from Teague Park School participating.

The awards ceremony was held recently at the Maine Veterans Home in Caribou, where the auxiliary thanked the teachers at Teague Park and the Veterans Home for allowing them the opportunity to tell the students about patriotism, and that it is because of these veterans that we have the freedoms we enjoy today.

Auxiliary members presented a report on flag education for kids, including how to properly display the flag, salute the flag and flag disposal, along with what not to do to the flag. All stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and students sang “This Is Our Country.”

Each student received a Young American Award certificate, a patriotic coloring book, a booklet on flag etiquette and a flag. First-, second- and third-place winners received certificates and a monetary award, while the rest of the top 10 received honorable mention certificates.

Students then gave each resident a small craft item they had made, after which all enjoyed visiting.
