MADAWASKA, Maine — Abigail Streinz (22:40) of Hersey took first place in the women’s group at Sunday’s Deprey Classic event at the Four Seasons Trail Association facilities.

The opening race of this year’s Aroostook Cup Race citizen’s series went on despite the temperatures barely reaching 0 degrees Fahrenheit without the wind chill factor. The National Weather Service indicated the winds made it feel as low as minus 15 at times.

Twenty-seven racers skied the six kilometer course, which was soft and slow due to the low temperatures and the foot of fresh snow dropped in the St. John Valley Thursday and Friday.

Streinz was followed by her sisters, Hannah with a time of 24:48 and Lydia with a time of 27:45.

The first place winner for the men was Daniel Streinz with a time of 19:45, followed closely by Jason Bartley of Presque Isle with a time of 19:46 and Caleb Streinz with a time of 19:47.

Fort Kent skiers Joey Bard, Jeff Dubis and Matt Kelly finished in 7th, 8th and 9th places, respectively.

Madawaska’s Isabelle Jandreau finished 5th among women, followed by Fort Kent’s Sherry Dubis. Gina Jandreau of Madawaska finished 8th.

Local supporters Reno Deprey, Becky Manley and The Ski Shop in Van Buren provided raffle and other prizes for the event.

The next Aroostook Cup event is set for Jan. 28 at the Fort Kent Outdoor center. Skiers next return to the Four Seasons on March 24 for the season-ending Acadia Marathon event.
