County hockey teams square off Tuesday; Wheaton scores 1,000th in PI girls’ hoop win

The Presque Isle hockey team goes after its sixth win of the season Tuesday when it entertains County rival Houlton/Hodgdon/Southern Aroostook/Katahdin at 6:15 p.m. at the Forum.

The Wildcats are currently 5-2 and in third place in the Class B North division, while the Blackhawks are 2-5 and in sixth out of nine teams.

In basketball action, Central Aroostook hosts the Van Buren girls at 5:30 p.m. and Easton is home to Katahdin, with that game set to tip off at 6 p.m. Boys games on the schedule include GHCA at Ashland at 6 p.m., Fort Fairfield at Washburn at 7 p.m. and Central Aroostook at Houlton, also at 7 p.m.

Southern Aroostook downed Central Aroostook in a key girls basketball game to move into first place in the Class D North standings, and Emily Wheaton of the Presque Isle Wildcats hit a big milestone with the 1,000th point of her career in a road victory at Old Town. More on those games and other summaries from a busy Monday of basketball are as follows:

Boys basketball

Ashland 67, Washburn 39 — The Hornets used a 38-15 run in the second and third periods to win going away in Washburn.

Ashland (3-8) was led by the trio of Dylan Haley (20 points) and Steven Bellanceau and Bailey Clark (18 points each).

Washburn, which lost for the ninth consecutive time to begin the season, was paced by Aidan Churchill’s 15 points.

Foxcroft Academy 66, Caribou 50 — Hyatt Smith poured in a game-high 31 points as host Foxcroft Academy improved to 4-6 and sent the Vikes to their sixth loss in the last seven games.

Jeremy Richard had 15 points for the winners, while Isaac Marker’s 13 points and Parker Deprey’s 10 led Caribou, now 4-8 overall. Austin Findlen (nine) and Alex Bouchard (eight) combined for 17 more for the Vikes.

Easton 62, Hodgdon 60 — At Easton, Collin Sotomayor scored a game-high 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and Noah Hanscomb and Camden Michaud combined for 27 more to lead Easton to its sixth win in 11 games.

Kyle Flewelling contributed eight points and Keagan Kinney had seven more as Easton avenged a 63-60 loss in Hodgdon on Dec. 14.

Josh Palmer’s 17 points paced 3-9 Hodgdon. Ethan Carter had 12 points, Jacob Ritchie 10 and Andrew Tuttle nine for the Hawks.

Presque Isle 66, Old Town 39 — At MacKenzie Gym in Old Town, Presque Isle jumped out to a 20-12 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

The Wildcats were led by senior guard Griffin Guerrette, who netted a game-high 20 points. Jonah Hudson added 17 points and Jack Bonville chipped in with 12 off the bench. Dom Mitchell led Old Town with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Central Aroostook 63, Southern Aroostook 41 — At Mars Hill, Caleb Harris and Ben Thomas each scored 12 points to propel Central Aroostook (10-1) to its 10th consecutive victory.

Jayden Burpee paced Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook, now 4-7, with 12 points.

Houlton 68, Central 40 — At Houlton Monday, the two squads met for the second time in three days. And while the result was closer, the Shires prevailed once again.

Keegan Gentle scored 15 points and Cameron Cleary added 14 to power Houlton past the Red Devils of Corinth. Nolan Porter added 11 points for Houlton.

Dylan Ham paced Central with 13 points and Scott Ferrie added 10.

Girls basketball

Caribou 48, Foxcroft Academy 44 — At Dover-Foxcroft, the Vikings erased a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter and came back to beat the Ponies.

Searra Herbert scored 19 points to lead 7-5 Caribou and Gabrielle Marquis netted 10 points.

Makenzie Beaudry tossed in a game-high 21 points and Cassidy Marsh posted 20 to pace Foxcroft Academy (2-7).

Hodgdon 42, Easton 20 — Kylie Mooers scored a game-high 14 points and Sydney Howell had 11 more as Hodgdon evened its record at 5-5 with the easy win at Easton.

Isabelle Morin’s seven points led Easton, now 1-9. Lydia Ferris added five and Emma Lamoreau four for the Bears.

Southern Aroostook 61, Central Aroostook 48 — Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook placed four scorers in double figures to defeat Central Aroostook for the second time this season, this time in Mars Hill.

Kassidy Mathers led the Warriors with 15 points while Kacy Daggett and Sydney Brewer scored 13 points apiece and Makaelyn Porter chipped in with 11 points as Southern Aroostook improved its record to 10-1.

Central Aroostook was led by Ashlee Harris, who nailed four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points. Kassie Levesque added 10. The Panthers are now 7-4.

Presque Isle 64, Old Town 29Emily Wheaton had 17 points, including the 1,000th of her career, and she also contributed seven assists and seven rebounds as the Wildcats cruised past the Coyotes in Old Town.

Maggie Castonguay had 12 points and 10 other players scored for the 7-2 Wildcats. Hannah Richards had eight points to lead 3-7 Old Town.

Ashland 45, Washburn 37 — The Hornets improved to 7-5 with the win at Washburn. An 18-6 run in the third quarter put Ashland in control.

Jamie Poulin, a freshman, paced the Hornets with 15 points and Amber Chasse contributed nine more.

Kassie Farley had 19 to pace Washburn, now 3-7.

Friday boys basketball

Houlton 81, Central 24 — At Corinth Friday in one of the few games played on the night, Keegan Gentle scored a game-high 17 points to lead Houlton over the Red Devils. Jaron Gentle added 12, and Cameron Callanan and Nick Brewer each scored 11 for the Shiretowners.

Dylan Ham scored nine points for Central.

Houlton led 15-5, 29-5 and 54-16 at the quarter breaks.
