Owl men split with Roos, women lose 3 games

The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls on Saturday avenged a loss the previous evening to the SUNY-Canton Roos, using a big second half to gain a 66-53 victory.

The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Owls, who are now 8-9 overall.

Kevin Collins scored 21 points, Anthony Chacho had 12 points and seven rebounds and Maurice Harris 11 points and nine rebounds to lead the Owls.

On Friday, the UMPI women dropped an 89-74 decision despite leading by 13 points at halftime. Deandre Duncombe led the Owls’ offense with 24 points and Kim Collins registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.

The UMPI women are now 2-13 after losing twice to SUNY-Canton and also falling to Bowdoin College Sunday.

The Owls lost to the Roos Friday, 66-60, and on Saturday by a score of 74-43. Kendra Silvers had 16 points and Teagan Laweryson 13 points for UMPI on Friday, while Emilia Churchill netted 11 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Owls in Saturday’s game.

Laweryson posted 12 points to lead UMPi in the 102-29 loss at Bowdoin to cap the busy weekend. UMPI trailed 30-2 at the end of the first quarter against the Bowdoin squad. Presque Isle High School graduate Hannah Graham was one of four players in double figures for the hosts, tallying 10 points.

The UMPI teams host UM-Machias Wednesday. The women’s game begins at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 7 p.m.
