HODGDON, Maine — Sydney Howell of Ludlow, a senior at Hodgdon Middle/High School, has been selected to receive the 2018 Principal’s Award, Principal Mary Harbison announced last week.

The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

As a member of the Hodgdon Middle/High School community, Howell has been active in many sports, clubs, and organizations. She has been a member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams all four years; has played club volleyball for two years; has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years; has been a member of the Student Council for three years; has volunteered at the Linneus Haunted Hay Ride for four years; has played flute in the school band for four years; has been a member of McGill’s Community Band for two years and plans to continue; and has worked at the Pleasant View Tree Farm.

“Sydney has not made a decision on a college as of yet, but her options are Husson University with a major in occupational therapy, the University of Maine Orono with a major in communication sciences and disorders, or the University of Maine Presque Isle with a major in psychology,” Harbison said. “At the end of this semester, Sydney will have completed more than 50 college credits, the equivalent of more than three semesters of college, allowing her to begin her actual college years as a second semester sophomore.”

Howell, Harbison, and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 12:30 p.m.

The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. Mr. McGowan and Mr. Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association. An additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.

The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
