Mary Jane (Plourde) Higgins

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Mary Jane (Plourde) Higgins, 86, passed away on May 31, 2018. She was born on March 30, 1932, in Stockholm, the daughter of William and Anna (Saucier) Plourde.

She attended Aroostook State Teachers College, did her student teaching at Farmington State Normal School, and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a B.S. in Education.
For 17 years, she taught first-grade at Pine Street Elementary School, before becoming a mother and staying home to raise her children. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who loved spending time with and taking care of children. A lifelong reader, she passed on her love of reading to her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed various word puzzles and games.
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 37 years, Maurice Keith Higgins. She is survived by two daughters, Anne Francois of Biddeford, and Kathy Higgins of Presque Isle; a son, Michael Higgins of Cambridge, Mass.; a sister, Mildred Blanchette of Caribou, and a sister-in-law, Constance Parker of Presque Isle; two granddaughters, Christa and Jayla Francois; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
She was predeceased by brothers, Leo Plourde, Wilfred Plourde, Leonel Plourde, William Plourde, and Rosaire Plourde, and sisters, Rose Boutot, Isabel Lewis, Amanda Bourgoin, and Laura Thibodeau.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m., June 5, 2018, Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Presque Isle. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mary Jane’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Red Cross, or another charity of your choice.
