Area chamber welcomes summer with sale of 3,000 strawberry shortcakes

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — At least a dozen people lined up at the North Street Plaza late Thursday morning to kick off summer with the sweet taste of strawberry shortcakes.

The Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce held its annual strawberry shortcake sale on June 21, with board members and community volunteers working around the clock to serve customers and make special deliveries to the 1,600 individuals and businesses in and around Presque Isle who had placed orders beforehand.

“The shortcake sale is one of the chamber’s biggest fundraisers for the year,” Sherry Sullivan, chair of the chamber board of directors, said. “We’ll be here until we sell out.”

Later that day, around 2 p.m., the chamber posted on its Facebook page that the group had sold out of a total 3,000 strawberry shortcakes.

The item proved popular with people of all ages. Piper Pelkey, 6, enjoyed eating her first strawberry shortcake, but thought the dessert needed a little something extra.

“I’m looking for the chocolate inside,” Pelkey said, as she ate her shortcake.

For others, the event was a great way to get outside and support the chamber’s year round activities.

“It brings people out to support a good cause,” said Rosemary Lavway of Westfield. “Tasting the delicious strawberry shortcake is the best part.”
