Island Falls Lakes Association enjoys strong turnout for 2018 Fishing Derby

ISLAND FALLS, Maine — The Island Falls Lakes Association had a strong turnout for its 2018 Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 30. 

Steve Edwards, president of the association, reported 73 registered participants took part in this year’s event. Derby participants could fish on Mattawamkeag Lake and/or Pleasant Pond this year.

A total of 58 fish were weighed and registered by the end of day, with 30 fish from Mattawamkeag Lake and 28 from Pleasant Pond. In addition to the cash prizes, derby participants had the opportunity to participate in a special prize raffle.

In the children’s derby, first place winners were: Luke Jackson, bass, 2.8 pounds; Robby Wood, pickerel, 1.78; Cole Signoretti, salmon, 2.76; Emma Byers, trout, 1.99; and Abigail Farnsworth, white perch, 0.24.

In the adult derby, the top three winners were:

Bass — 1, Dana Charette, 3.17 pounds; 2, Cliff Urquhart, 2.85; and 3, Kim Haggan, 2.66.

Pickerel — 1, Paul Ouellette, 2.96; Dick Vining, 2.88; and 3, Jacob Richard, 2.56.

Salmon — 1, Jim Kelley, 3.80; 2, Peter Blood, 3.04; and 3, Carol Blood, 2.27.

Trout — 1, Bruce Boisvert, 1.55; 2, David Butterfield, 1.30; and 3, Jim Kelley, 1.02.

White Perch — 1, Jacob Richard, 0.83; 2, Ken Cutler, 0.46; and 3, Ken Cutler, 0.38.

The “Catch of the Day” and the “Cupcake Bar” were the highlight of the evening dinner, according to event chairman Deb Dwyer. She credited the many lake association members, business sponsors, community volunteers, and derby participants for making the event such a success.

“We are looking forward to our July events that include the kayak/canoe races on July 29 and the annual lobster/steak dinner on July 31,” she said.
