Mapleton Daze has successful weekend

The 2018 Mapleton Daze weekend has come and gone.  The Mapleton Daze Committee thanks everyone who came out to the many events held over the last four days of June.

The Woodie Waddell Cribbage Tournament and Bingo night had the highest attendance this year as compared to all past years the events were held.

On Friday, there were several periods of rain during the day, but as the skies cleared for the evening the Mapleton Lions Club held a well-attended chicken barbecue.  Adam Nicak, club president, reported good dinner sales considering the rainstorm in late in the afternoon. The United Methodist Women had excellent pie and coffee sales as did the United Baptist Youth with their many flavors of homemade ice cream.  The evening ended with a lengthy fireworks show that everyone enjoyed.

Saturday started with a free community breakfast put on by the Mapleton Area churches.  Serving breakfast sandwiches and coffee to all who attended, the churches collected a pick-up truck load of non-perishable food for the Mapleton Community Food Box, which is available to families with food needs.

Following the breakfast, the annual Mapleton Day Parade was held with many spectators along the parade route.  The Haystack Historical Society opened its homemade pie and ice cream sale as the parade started. Society President Alice Shepard stated they started with a variety of 20 different pies and sold them all by end of the afternoon.

Children’s activities included the many games, arts and crafts and the 27 foot Cliff Hanger Slide with the Wipe Out Balls.  The auto show at the Mapleton Baptist Church was well-attended with more than 20 antique and hot rod cars on display.

Saturday ended with the Mapleton Lions Club baked ham and bean dinner.  Dinner entertainment was provided by Mapleton Lion Club Member Jake Graham, who was the Northern Star Winner.  Finally, the night closed with a dance featuring a DJ.

All in all the Mapleton Daze Committee was pleased with the success of the entire weekend.  They thank the many supporters who made the weekend possible. They are starting the planning for the 2019 Mapleton Daze weekend.

Historical Society scholarships

The Haystack Historical Society annually awards two scholarships to two graduating Presque Isle High School students from the towns of Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hills.  High school transcripts, scholarship applications and student extracurricular activities are considered in determining scholarship winners.

For 2018, the society awarded Gabrielle Jandreau and Emily Wheaton, two outstanding PIHS graduates.  The society wishes both of these young women the very best as they begin their collegiate journeys.

Wreaths project

Mary Anne Buck of Maine Agri-Women began the fundraising for the Christmas wreaths that will be placed on the graves of veterans in Mapleton’s South Side Cemetery as part of Wreaths Across America.

During Mapleton Daze, she began selling raffle tickets for handmade patriotic quilt.  She said she was delighted with the positive response that she received as she explained to the ticket buyers the purpose of the program.

This December 18, wreaths will be laid across the country, occurring simultaneously at 1,400 locations including Arlington National Cemetery. The 114 veterans buried in the South Side Cemetery will be honored by having a Christmas wreath placed on their graves.

For this project to be successful, Maine Agri-Women will need considerable volunteer assistance as well as help with fundraising.  Each wreath costs $15. Families who would like to sponsor a wreath for a loved one who is buried at South Side should contact Buck at 764-0635, email maryannebuck9@gmail.com, or Judy Kenney, 764-1787 or kenneyj062@gmail.com.

Last year Maine Agri-Women laid wreaths at a cemetery in Bridgewater.
