Peanut Carnival parade winds way through Houlton

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Recreation Department will host its annual Peanut Carnival from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2.

To promote the carnival, a parade wound its way through Market Square Wednesday morning featuring a number of costumed children tossing peanuts to those gathered to watch.

For decades, the Houlton Recreation Department has closed out its summer program with the popular peanut carnival. Participants buy a bag of peanuts which are then used as payment to play a variety of games, all of which are run by children who attended the Just For Kids program this summer.

The highlight of the evening will be the crowning of the 2018 Peanut King and Queen at 8 p.m. Last year’s royalty, Jace Morse and Taylor London, will pass on their crowns to one of the following candidates — Hailey Flewelling and Stevie Suitter, ages 5-6; Trinity Bartley and Grady Woods, ages 7-8; Amelia Flewelling and Finn Gardiner, ages 9-10; and Emma Merrill and Jay Tweedie, 11-13.

This family event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Rec Center at 532-1310. In case of rain, activities will be held inside.
