GHCA Harvest Festival brings autumn flair to fundraising

HOULTON, Maine — The annual Greater Houlton Christian Academy Harvest Festival and Auction drew a large gathering for what has become one of the school’s largest fundraising events.

With ideal weather conditions, youngsters tried their hand at such activities as putting a golf ball into the mouth of a jack o’lantern, doing a limbo contest, and knocking over plastic bottles with a bean bag.

While the children enjoyed games outside, organized by one of the school’s newest teachers Chelsea Hand, adults were able to partake of the school’s annual auction, which featured a variety of handmade items donated to the school.

“We have done an auction ever since the school started down at the County Road Baptist Church back in 1985,” said Tom Zimmerman, headmaster for GHCA, which is now located at 27 School St. in Houlton. “We are reluctant to overwhelm businesses, because we know they are always getting asked for donations. This is our once-a-year thing. We have quite a few new sponsors and gift certificates this year.”

The auction traditionally raises more than $11,000 for the school and is one of the single largest fundraisers held during the year.

GHCA has provided a Christian education to students from Aroostook County, New Brunswick, and even overseas for 33 years. It is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Association of Christian Schools International.
