CARIBOU, Maine — With the temporary loss of Teague Park due to the construction for a new PreK-8 school, officials with the city and Caribou Recreation Department will host a series of smaller scale Winter Carnival events this week, and plan to host a similar week of mini Winter Carnival events from March 16 to 23.

Activities start Feb. 19, with Broadway Kids in The County, a theatre company that focuses on visiting towns in Aroostook County and working primarily with children aged 18 and under.

The theatre group will work with vacationing school students in the multipurpose room of the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center Feb. 19 to 22. From 1 to 3 p.m. the instructors will work with children in third through fifth grade, helping them to pick five to ten songs that relate to an average school day. Then they’ll create together a performance based around this “Soundtrack to My School Day.” The process will include students helping to procure props and costumes as well as picking the order of the songs for a show to be performed publicly from 1-3 p.m. on Friday.

From 3 to 5 p.m., each day, the theatre company will work with sixth to eighth graders on “10 Musicals in 8 Minutes.” This exercise will challenge the youngsters to sing songs from 10 different musicals in eight minutes. Throughout the first three days, participants will pick songs, costumes, props, and memorize lyrics and dances to culminate in a show for friends, relatives and the general public 3-5 p.m. on Friday.

The theater company will film all the performances on Friday.

Separately, on Wednesday, Feb. 20, children and families will have free access to an “inflatable playland” at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Then on Friday the Northern Maine Community Recreation Association and Melody Roller Rink will offer skating at a reduced rate of $6 from 10 a.m. to noon.
