Gun owners group holds first meeting

The Aroostook County Chapter of Gun Owners of Maine held their first meeting Saturday, Feb. 23, at the historic Rice Building in Market Square, downtown Houlton.

There were 27 individuals in attendance, including two local state representatives. Those attending discussed topics including current proposed legislation, fundraising, outreach, and education.

The proposed Maine Senate Bill LD810, An Act To Require Background Checks for All Private Firearm Sales or Transfers Except Between Family Members, prompted much interest. The content of this legislation was previously proposed as a referendum and voted down by Maine voters in 2016.

The chapter will meet both in Houlton and north in the Caribou/Presque Isle area. The next meeting will take place Saturday, March 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Rice Building in Houlton. A meeting is also slated Saturday, March 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 358 Washburn St., Caribou.

Gun Owners Of Maine is an all-volunteer, grassroots, non-profit organization dedicated to defending and promoting the gun rights of Mainers.
