Caribou hospital slates blood drives

CARIBOU, Maine — With someone in the U.S. needing blood every two seconds, blood products must be constantly replenished. Cary Medical Center has a long history of partnering with the Red Cross to meet this important need, and the tradition will continue in 2019 with Cary hosting six drives throughout the year.

The hospital held its first drive on Thursday, Feb. 21, and plans five other drives on Thursday, April 18; Thursday, June 20; Thursday, Aug. 11; Tuesday, Oct. 22; and Thursday, Dec. 19.

“The generosity of the donors is inspiring; we can’t thank them enough for taking time out of their day to help save the lives of others,” said Elizabeth Singer, Cary blood drive coordinator. “A simple blood donation can help someone with cancer, a premature baby, a trauma victim and more.”

The Red Cross states that up to three patients can benefit from one donation. In 2018, more than 360 blood donations were collected at Cary drives, which means these donors helped more than 1,000 patients.

All Cary drives are held at the Caribou Inn & Convention Center from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

To make an appointment to donate, donors can call Kristi Herron at 498-6516 or visit redcrossblood.org.
