Credit unions slate financial fitness fair for high school juniors

LIMESTONE, Maine — The Aroostook County Chapter of Credit Unions, which includes Acadia Federal Credit Union, NorState Federal Credit Union and The County Federal Credit Union, will host its 12th annual financial fitness fair at 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Loring Job Corps in Limestone.

The annual event helps high school juniors from each Aroostook County high school learn about money management and budgeting.

“The Loring Financial Fitness Fair is one of our chapter’s signature events,” said Denise Duperré, chair of the Aroostook County Chapter of Credit Unions. “Every high school in the county is invited to bring their junior class here to learn meaningful financial skills.  On average, we see over 300 kids. It’s a learning event, but we keep it fun, which is why we have great student participation.”

During the fair, students are provided a mock career and monthly income and are challenged to work through a budget taking into account expenses such food, student loans, clothing, and insurance.  Students visit booths and meet with credit union representatives who guide them on managing their budgets, living within their means, and building their credit scores.

“We provide the students with real-world experiences to get them thinking about how they should manage their money after they graduate,” said Duperré.  “Sometimes, life throws us curveballs, so our experience even includes scenarios with financial emergencies.”

Students attending the fair can also apply for a $1,000 college scholarship payable to them once they complete their first semester at university. Applicants must attend the fair; plan to enroll in a two-year or four-year college/university; be a member, or have a parent who is a member of a credit union in Aroostook County; complete the scholarship application form in its entirety; and submit the form to any of the three credit unions by June 30, 2018.

“Our chapter is looking forward to hosting this special event and reviewing the scholarship applications we receive,” said Duperré. “Preparing our kids for life after high school is important and our credit unions are proud to do our part.”

The event will conclude at 1 p.m.  Attendees will enjoy a bagged lunch prepared by students in Loring Job Corps’ culinary arts program. Additional cash prizes also will be offered.
