From the Bunkers – Week of May 6, 2019

Well, what a difference a few days of dry weather makes. Although there are still a couple of the perennial wet spots, it looks like it has dried up enough that we will be opening the course to the public on Wednesday, May 8. Right now, it will be walking and pull carts only, but we will be reassessing conditions as the week progresses.

The irrigation system will be up and running by then, as we have a couple of leaks to attend to. It looks like the season will be off to a good start. As our crew transitions to mowing and maintenance, I will mention that on Saturday, May 25, we will have a volunteer day, to do some minor cleanup in the plantation pine areas. We will start at 8:30 a.m. and go until we get done. Of course, many hands make for quicker work, and I would really like to see some of our younger members come out also. We will have burgers and drinks at lunch. You do not have to commit to the whole time. So if you could set aside a few hours that day it will be appreciated.

The Ladies Association Opening Banquet will be held on Tuesday, May 14, at the Lakeside Restaurant. Come to Happy Hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be at 6 p.m. The cost will be $16 for fish or chicken entree. Call Holly McPartland at 694-9611 by May 8 or the clubhouse after to sign up.

The first day of Ladies play will be a scramble on Tuesday, May 28, weather permitting. The HCGC Memorial Tournament will be on Saturday, June 1, at noon. This game will honor those members that have passed. All members are invited to play in this fun time of comradery and fellowship. Signup sheet is on the event wall in the bar. The Men’s League is scheduled to begin on June 10. Get your team signed up in the clubhouse. This is a handicap League and all players are welcome.

As stated, the clubhouse will be open starting Wednesday. Now would be a great time to meet Bart Dunn our new clubhouse manager, and turn in your membership application. And if you have not been a member in 2017 and 2018 seasons, you can join now for 50 percent off the current membership fee. Call the clubhouse or come on in for more info.

The Lakeside Restaurant begins its normal seasonal hours beginning Wednesday, May 8. Wednesday to Saturday will be 11 a.m. to last seating at 8 p.m. Sunday will be 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This coming Sunday,  they will having a dinner to celebrate Mother’s Day. Paul LaPointe will be there to provide musical entertainment from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Call Nancy at 694-9494 to make your reservations.

It looks like the weather is going to start cooperating as the temperatures are climbing , which will be good for the greens as they continue to improve. As the crew is able to get on the course for mowing, we believe that our golf course will be back to the wonderful conditions that you are used to. And soon we will see you out on the course playing.

Houlton Community Golf Course is located on 6 Country Club Drive in New Limerick. For more information on the course call 532-2662 or email houltongolf@gmail.com
