Stearns stuns Cougars in D softball semifinal

STACYVILLE, Maine — Hopes of reaching the regional championship for the first time in many years were abruptly dashed for the Katahdin softball squad Saturday.

Just a few hours after many on the squad received their diplomas during the school’s graduation ceremony, No. 1 Katahdin (14-2 overall) ran into a fierce opponent in the form of No. 4 Stearns of Millinocket. (15-3)

Stearns bested Katahdin 15-3 in the Class D North semifinal. Stearns advances to Tuesday’s Class D North championship against No. 2 Penobscot Valley. The Howlers of Howland are the two-time defending Class D state champions.

Freshman pitcher Alisyn Alley struck out four for Stearns and also had a double to help her cause. Junior Lily Cullen had five strikeouts inside the pitching circle for Katahdin.

Stearns bashed 17 hits in Saturday afternoon’s contest. Maisey Girsa blasted a grand slam and also had a double and single to lead the way. Paige Russell had three singles, while Kasey Kenyon and Tatiana Mohaff both added two singles and a triple. Katie Kenyon had two singles, Becka Glidded had a double and Katherine Alley added a single.

For Katahdin, Emma McNally had a double and single, while Lindsay Drew added two singles and Erin Lake had one single.
