Southern Aroostook Community High School awards scholarships

DYER BROOK, Maine — Southern Aroostook Community High School Seniors received scholarship awards at the school’s graduation ceremony Friday, June 7.

Principal Jonathan Porter presented the following awards:

The Tyler Grand Maison MELMAC Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to Kylie Vining; Vining also received the Youth Basketball Scholarship in the amount of $500, The Ricker College Scholarship for $1,500 (renewable for four years) and a S.T.E.M. scholarship on behalf of the Siemen’s Corp for $750.

Principal Porter presented the Northern Maine Community College Presidential Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 (renewable for two years) to Madison Cummings and an anonymous scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to Katelyn Slauenwhite. He presented a $100 scholarship in memory of his father, “Pete” Porter to Kassidy Mathers.

Last year’s recipient of the George Mitchell Scholarship, Hunter Walker presented this year’s Mitchell scholarship to Mathers in the amount of $10,000 to be distributed over four years.

Guidance Counselor Jessica Greene presented the following awards: Aroostook Aspirations, the Gauvin Scholarships, $1,000 each (renewable) to Johnathan Hardy and Vining; the Novatus Wind Energy Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each to Slauenwhite and Vining.

Greene also presented two Sherman Alumni Scholarships in the amount of $175 each to Mathers and Slauenwhite. She presented the New England Service Scholarship and the College in the County Scholarship, $1,000 each, to Vining. The VaJoWa Scholarships for $100 each went to Mathers and Vining. The Katahdin Valley Health Center Scholarships for $250 each were awarded to Madison Lilley and Vining.

Two scholarships in Memory of Kelly A. Greene, for $500 each, were awarded by Ben Greene and presented by their daughters, Esther and Ruth, to Slauenwhite and Vining.

The Mike and Heidi Community Fund Scholarship was awarded to Cummings in the amount of $250. This award was made by Heidi’s son, Paul Suitter. The Jarrica Rose Emery Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500 was presented by Jarrica’s mother, Cindy Emery Cole, to Cummings.

Island Falls High School Alumnae Rebecca Drew presented four $500 scholarships to SACS Seniors with ties to alumnus of Island Falls High School: Johnathan Hardy, Autumn Jacobs,  Mathers and Slauenwhite. Drew also presented the David Ryan Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500 to: Autumn Jacobs.

Drew awarded two $500 scholarships from the Curry Family, in memory of Joyce Curry, to Madison Lilley and Slauenwhite.

The Katahdin Club Scholarship was presented by Rachel Daniels to Hardy in the amount of $500.

Diana Cullinan Betschner presented two $250 scholarships in Memory of her father, Peter Cullinan to Cummings and Lilley.

Crystal Briggs Folsom presented a $200 scholarship in memory of her father, Arthur Briggs, to Cummings.

The Dollars for Scholars scholarships were presented as follows by Dyer Brook Town Manager, Florence Hardy for a total amount of $37,250: the Malcolm and Priscilla Palmer Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each went to Cummings, Hardy, Lilley, Mathers, Slauenwhite, Garrett Siltz and Vining.

The Southern Aroostook Educational Trust Scholarships in the amount of $500 each were presented to: Cummings, Lilley, Siltz and Vining.

Katahdin Federal Credit Union Scholarships for $500 each were presented to Cummings, Slauenwhite and Vining; and The Kevin Hunt Memorial Scholarship for $200 was presented to Slauenwhite.

Cummings received a $100 Oakfield Thriftway Scholarship, $100 from the Audrey Benn Memorial, $100 from the Bev Clark Memorial, $100 from the Maryann Sprague Edwards Memorial, $500 from Houlton Rotary Scholarship, $400 from the Oakfield Alumni Scholarship, $500 from the G.Arnold Roach Memorial Scholarship, $400 from the RSU 50 Education Association Scholarship, and a Dollars for Scholars Scholarship in the amount of $1,500.

Hardy received scholarships as follows: Jerry’s Food Store Scholarship for $100, Gertrude and Alston Morrison Scholarship for $100, Oakfield Alumni Scholarship for $100, Oakfield Thriftway Scholarship for $100. G. Arnold Roach Memorial Scholarship for $500, Martha A. Powers Memorial Trust for $250, York’s of Houlton Scholarship for $250 and $500 from Dollars for Scholars.

Lilley received the Dr. Ronald Blum Scholarship for $250, the Edwards Family Memorial Scholarship for $100, the Houlton Hospital Medical Staff Scholarship for $200, S. H. Nevers Scholarship for $250, Katahdin Trust Company Scholarship for $500, Oakfield Alumni Scholarship for $400, Oakfield Thriftway Scholarship for $100, Martha A. Powers Trust for $250 and Dollars for Scholars for $1,500.

Jakob Malone received an Oakfield Thriftway Scholarship for $100 and an Oakfield Alumni Scholarship for $100.

Mathers was awarded the following: from the Bowers Scholarship Fund for $100, Diane Desmond Memorial Scholarship for $100, Bates Fuel Scholarship for $200, Bernal and Gladys Clark Memorial Scholarship for $100, Ted Friel Memorial Scholarship for $100, an Oakfield Alumni Scholarship for $100 and a Dollars for Scholars Scholarship for $500.

Siltz received an Oakfield Alumni Scholarship for $100, Charlotte Benn McDonald Scholarship for $200, Jerry’s Food Store for $100, Island Falls Lakes Association for $250, Katahdin Cedar Log Homes for  $250, Oakfield Thriftway Scholarship for $100, Phil Sherman Memorial Scholarship for $100, Martha A. Powers Trust for $250, Pennies for Seniors for $200 and a Dollars for Scholars Scholarship for $1,500.

Slauenwhite received a scholarship from the Community Living Association for $50, an Oakfield

Alumni Scholarship for $100, Martha A. Powers Memorial Trust for $250, Houlton Regional Hospital Medical Staff for $150 and a Dollars for Scholars Scholarship for $200.

Vining was awarded scholarships from the Community Living Association in the amount of $50,

Jerry’s Food Store for $100, Island Falls Fishing Derby for $100, Oakfield Alumni Scholarship for $400, Houlton Regional Hospital Medical Staff for $150, S. H. Nevers Scholarship for $250, Jacob and Arthur Shur Memorial Scholarship for $200, Pennies for Seniors for $1,000 and a Dollars for Scholars Scholarship for $1,500.
