Session to teach building, growing with high tunnels

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The National Resources Conservation Service and Central Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District will offer a high tunnel workshop in September at two locations in Aroostook County.

The two-day sessions will take place in Presque Isle on Wednesday, Sept. 4, and Thursday, Sept. 5, and in Fort Kent on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and Thursday, Sept. 12. Location and times are yet to be announced.

Randy Martin, CASWCD executive director and proprietor of The King’s Gardener farm and greenhouses of Presque Isle, will share his 30 years of experience with greenhouse and high tunnel production.

“The first day of the workshop we will erect a high tunnel frame and cover the pros and cons of many construction techniques for here in the far North,” said Martin. “The second day will be devoted to cultural practices inside the high tunnel with an emphasis on water requirements, timing, shading, soil health and pest management.”

Those who currently operate a high tunnel, or plan to do so in the future, are encouraged to attend this opportunity to network with other growers. A representative from USDA Rural Development will be present for part of the second day at both workshops to share opportunities for loan/grant funds that may be available to growers.

Lunch and snacks will be provided both days thanks to a greenhouse company sponsorship. Workshop presenters will need an accurate head count to ensure enough food.

Two pesticide recertification credits will be offered for the second day. Participants may attend one or both days.
