Nearly 100 turn out for Tasty Options Market

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Housing Authority hosted its first Tasty Options Market on August 15, giving away produce and educational resources to over 100 residents from the public housing community through their partnership with the Presque Isle Farmers’ Market, Micmac Farms and the SNAP-Ed program.

According to organizers, the goal of the market was to provide educational resources to SNAP recipients for the Maine Harvest Bucks program. Representatives from local markets were on site to answer residents’ questions, including Deena Albert Parks, Presque Isle Farmers’ Market chairperson; Jacob Pelkey, marketing manager for Micmac Farms; and Lindsay Pelletier, information booth manager.

The event showcased a variety of produce from Micmac Farms and Goughan’s Farm, along with recipe demonstrations from Maddie Delaney with SNAP-Ed featuring smoothies and salads.

“We are pleased with the turnout and community collaboration that made our first farmers’ market event happen,” said Laurie Amero, executive assistant at the Presque Isle Housing Authority. “The produce was distributed to about 40 households in our community, and the kids enjoyed sampling fresh items and discovering new favorites. We look forward to another Tasty Options Market next year.”

The Presque Isle Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday at the Riverside Pavilion in Presque Isle and, along with Micmac Farms, accepts credit cards, SNAP, EBT and Maine Harvest Bucks.
