Houlton, GHCA cross country squads open season

MADAWASKA, Maine — The combined Houlton and Greater Houlton Chrisitan Academy boys and girls cross country teams experienced their first meet of the season at the Four Seasons Trail Association.

The Houlton girls took home top honors in the race, which also featured runners from Fort Kent, Washburn, Fort Fairfield and Madawaska. Results for the girls were: Houlton/GHCA, 23 points; Fort Kent, 39; Washburn, 58; and Fort Fairfield,  no score.

Team scores for the boys were: Washburn, 28; Madawaska, 45; Fort Kent, 62; and Houlton and Fort Fairfield, no score.

“The first meet of the season went very well for our team,” coach Chris Rines said. “The Four Seasons Trail Association facility is top notch and quite challenging for the first race of the year, but our kids handled it well and we had some encouraging results.”

According to Rines, the girls team score of 23 points might be a new team-record.

Houlton’s Teagan Ewings was the individual girls winner, completing the course in 22 minutes, 41.8 seconds. Hot on her heels was teammate Emmalyne Drake, who finished second at 23:46.5. 

Other Shire girls finishers were 5, Jeannelle Ross 24:39.0; 9, Makenna Cooley, 25:07.1; 10,  Ellie Grant, 25:19.9; and 20, Hope Royal, 36:47.

The boys also logged solid individual efforts. Daniel Ross was in the pack of the top four runners, which ended up being separated by just twelve seconds. He placed third overall at 18:58.2. Other boys scorers were 7, Jeremy Stone, 19:36.5; 22, Nolan Jacobs, 24:10.4; and 28, Ean Bolstridge, 27:11.3.
