Vandals break windows, try to set Trailrunners clubhouse on fire over weekend

WASHBURN, Maine — Washburn Police are investigating a vandalism incident after the Trailrunners Clubhouse was damaged over the weekend.

A representative of the Trailrunners Club said the group found out about the incident on Sunday afternoon after a passerby noticed the damage to the building and reported it to Washburn Police.

Windows were broken with some screens and curtains burned through, in what both police and the club said was an attempt to set the building on fire.

The words “Wolf Gang” were left behind on a garage door in flourescent pink spray paint.

“It’s a sad day when you can’t have a place without a security system. Sometime between yesterday afternoon and this afternoon the clubhouse was vandalized and there was an attempt to start it [on] fire. Thank God the fire didn’t work in their favor,” the club posted to its Facebook page.

The incident is just one of a series of vandalism acts that have happened in Washburn over recent months, according to Sgt. Jarad Carney.

In May, a group of vandals attempted to set fire to a dugout in town. The name “Wolf Gang” was written on the building. An attempt to burn a second dugout happened again shortly after.

Carney said a group of juveniles is most likely responsible for the incidents.

Events that have already been scheduled will continue, the club said on Monday morning, but the clubhouse itself will be closed while the investigation is underway.

Carney said the department will continue to investigate the case with the help of the Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Trailrunners Club advises people with information about the incident to call Washburn Police at (207) 455-4043.
