Warrior girls advance to D semis

EAST MILLINOCKET, Maine — Upsets in the world of sports are always special and such was the case Tuesday afternoon as the No. 5 Southern Aroostook (10-5) girls soccer team upset No. 4 Schenck/Stearns, 3-1, in a Class D North quarterfinal.

SACS advances to the semifinals at noon Saturday to take on No. 1 Penobscot Valley (14-1)  on the artificial turf of Hampden Academy.

“One of the goals the girls mentioned to me at the beginning of the year was winning a quarterfinal game,” SA coach Audrey Violette said. “They went out with a few nerves, playing in a game they strongly wanted to win, and against a team we do not see during the regular season.”

The coach said the Warriors quickly worked through their nerves to accomplish their goal of advancing to the semifinals after bowing out in the quarterfinals the previous three seasons.

Freshman Madison Russell scored all three goals for the Warriors with assists coming from Emma Nadeau and Paige Vose. Alisyn Alley scored the lone goal for Schenck/Stearns.

Senior Sydney Brewer had a strong game in goal for SA making 32 saves on 42 shots. Katrina Gagnon and MacKenzie Friel shared net duties for Schenck/Stearns, with five saves on 11 shots.

“A shout out should go to the upperclassmen of the team for showing up to play and helping their teammates,” the coach added.
