Warriors eliminated in semis

HAMPDEN, Maine — The playoff road came to an end for the Southern Aroostook girls soccer team Saturday following a 3-1 loss to top-ranked Penobscot Valley of Howland in a Class D North semifinal.

Played at Hampden Academy, the Howlers (15-1 overall) received two goals from Delaney Theriault and one from Emily Cyr to beat Southern Aroostook. Lexi Ireland had two assists on the day.

For the No. 5 Warriors (10-6 overall), Madison Russell scored the lone goal.

Sydney Brewer made 14 saves on 26 shots for SA, while Emilee Ireland had six saves on 10 shots for the Howlers.

Penobscot Valley advances to the Class D North championship, where the Howlers will face No. 3 Central Aroostook, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Presque Isle Middle School. The Panthers of Mars Hill (13-3) advanced to the championship with a 4-3 upset win over No. 2 Ashland. (13-3) Saturday.
