115 Years Ago – Nov. 11, 1904

     New buildings going up The report of the building inspector shows that seventy-three new buildings have gone up in Houlton this season. With this large increase the demand for buildings has not yet been satisfied.

     A set date Thursday November the 24th has been designated as Thanksgiving Day by President Roosevelt.

100 Years Ago – Nov. 12, 1919

     Resigned position Ora E. Smart, who has been employed in the local post office in various capacities, and the past two years as city carrier, has resigned his position to enter business for himself.

75 Years Ago – Nov. 16, 1944

     Attends conference Miss Helen Mitchell left Tuesday for Augusta, where she attended a state conference of Volunteer and Professional U. S. O. Workers held there Wednesday.

     Property transferred Mrs. Nora L. Wright of Wright’s Lodge has purchased the former Estabrook property on Kelleran Street owned by Howard Tingley.

50 Years Ago – Nov. 12, 1969

     Taking over the town Houlton High School students will take over the town government this Friday but they can only keep it for the day. Friday will be Student Government Day, and the students will serve closely with their full-time counterparts in municipal affairs as they attempt to learn first hand what some of the problems and duties are within the town government. Town Manager Arthur Curtis has made arrangements for the one-day takeover, and activities will include a meeting of the student town council. 

     Practice teaching Dennis Roach of Houlton began his practice teaching at Houlton High School Monday. He is one of 95 University of Maine students from the Orono campus who will be student teaching in Maine communities during the eight-week period.

25 Years Ago – Nov. 16, 1994

    Grand opening The Houlton Center for the Arts held a grand opening celebration at its Fishman Mall location. Among those helping to cut the symbolic ribbon were: Nancy Ketch, director of the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce; Mary Lou Grim, center president; Wanda Desrosiers, representing the Retail Trade Board; and Bob Reece, chamber representative.

    Official opening — Houlton’s new Shop N’ Save store on the Ludlow Road officially opened Sunday with a ribbon cutting by Manager Will Wedge. The store is having sales and giveaways to celebrate its opening.
