115 Years Ago – Nov. 18, 1904
Big storm — The big storm of Sunday night was the cause of heavy damage throughout the New England states. It was the fiercest storm Maine has experienced in forty years. The heaviest damage was done to the telegraph and telephone companies.
In Houlton the telephone and Northern Telegraph Service were useless for two days. Enough snow fell to make good sleighing.
100 Years Ago – Nov. 19, 1919
Taking part in ceremonies — Col. F. M. Hume was in Van Buren last Tuesday where he took part in the ceremonies of celebrating Armistice Day.
Trip for work — E. J. Baker and Raymond Cummings of the Houlton Water Co.’s electrical department went to Davidson Monday to do some work there.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 23, 1944
New grocery store planned — A new self-service grocery store will be opened in Houlton soon after the first of the year by Basil Grant and John Dickison. The newly organized firm, both members of which now operate their own establishments, has been purchased from M. B. Berman, the wooden building on Court Street next to the Exchange Hotel lot.
In dispatchers office — Earl Curtis, for the past 15 years station agent at Oakfield, has been transferred to Houlton where he has been assigned to a position in the dispatcher’s office. He will move here with his family as soon as he can secure living accommodations.
50 Years Ago – Nov. 19, 1969
Going out of business — It was announced this week that the local M.H. Fishman Co. store on Main Street is going out of business after 35 years in Houlton. Company officials stated that ‘Although we are reluctant to leave this area, our present location is much too small for our type of operation.” Mr. Polk, company president, stated that he does not discount the possibility of sometime in the future that Fishman’s again will open this type of operation in the immediate area.
Sears gift to Ricker — John Buckley of Presque Isle, area representative of the Sears-Roebuck Foundation, presented a check for $300 to Ricker College President C. Worth Howard. The gift is one of nine such gifts to private colleges in Maine. The Sears-Roebuck Foundation contributed to 950 private colleges in the country.
25 Years Ago – Nov. 23, 1994
Winner — Roberta Schools received a Thanksgiving box donated by Shop ‘n Save from Houlton Federal Credit Union employee Betsy Norton. A drawing is held each week during November on a raffle with proceeds to benefit the Maine Credit Union League’s ‘Ending Hunger in Maine’ campaign. Barb Morris receives a stereo system from Norton. Morris won the system, donated by Ames of Houlton, during the first weekly raffle drawing.
New equipment — Mrs. Buswell’s class at Wellington School in Monticello received two new pieces of playground equipment donated to the school in memory of Jennifer Smith by the United Veterans Motorcycle Club of Houlton.
