High school cheerleaders to compete for County crown

CARIBOU, Maine — High school cheering squads from throughout Aroostook County have been busy practicing their competition routines for upcoming championship events.

 

The first competition of the season will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Caribou High School with squads from Houlton, Caribou, Presque Isle, Central Aroostook, Fort Fairfield and Southern Aroostook performing in the Aroostook League championship. 

Presque Isle is the defending Aroostook League champ, while Central Aroostook has won six consecutive state championships in Class D.

Middle school squads from Presque Isle, Caribou, Central Aroostook and Houlton were also invited to perform at the event.

The Spirit Award will be voted on by the competing teams and will be presented following the competition. An All-Aroostook team will be selected, as well as all-stars in jumps, tumbling and stunts.

The cost of admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Concessions will also be available.

Upcoming cheering dates are the Big East Conference championships, Saturday, Jan. 11 at noon at Hermon High School; Penobscot Valley Conference championships, 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Mattanawcook Academy; northern regional championships Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor; and state championships, Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Augusta Civic Center.
