Micmac Farm reschedules Winter Festival Market to next weekend

CARIBOU, Maine — Once again the Micmac Farms complex in Caribou will be bustling as the community explores 24 Aroostook County farmers, chefs, and artisans of the Winter Festival Market, slated from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The event was rescheduled from its original date of Feb. 8.

Throughout the afternoon guests are welcome to tour the 34,000-gallon Maine brook trout hatchery, participate in the seed catalog swap, enjoy musical guests, or enjoy a farm-to-table lunch and free coffee.

“Indoor winter markets throughout the state are on an upward trend as communities adapt to their love of local flavor,” said Jacob Pelkey of Micmac Farms. “Our monthly Caribou market has seen a growth in the number of visitors, number of vendor inquiries, and the amount of revenues generated by each exhibitor.”

The community is actively engaging the market and this can be seen through the musical guests that volunteer their time to play for the patrons and the exhibitors willing to donate items toward gift baskets raffles at the market.

“Innovations in farming allow for fresh foods outside of the traditional growing season,” Pelkey said. “We saw tomatoes raised in high tunnels available in December and see fresh microgreens grown under lights, and fresh fish harvested the morning of market.”

The collaborative effort between the City of Caribou, the Presque Isle Farmers Market and Micmac Farms is creating opportunity for producers throughout the year, and as a result, it keeps fresh local foods available to the community year-round.

The public is welcome and there is no cost to attend.
