PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team hosted North Atlantic Conference opponent Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Feb. 1 in a close game where the Owls pulled some late defensive stops to seal the victory 98-97.

The win was the second in a back-to-back weekend against Lyndon. On Jan 31 the Owls were able to hold off a late game Hornets run, winning 86-80.

According to UMPI sports information director Mark Knight, some great offensive play by both teams early on Feb. 1 led to a high scoring first half as both teams shot over 55 percent from the field. Zach Falkenburg led the Lyndon Hornets early with 16 first half points, while the Owls’ Griffin Guerrette of Presque Isle finished the first half with 13 points and Shyquinn Dix of Stamford, Connecticut, had 14 points. UMPI led by six at the end of the first half, 52-46.

Te’Von Hines of Alexandria, Virginia, netted 17 points while Chris Brown of Port St. Lucie, Florida, contributed 11. The Hornets continued to answer, and with four minutes left in the game, with the Owls up 94-81, the Hornets racked up 14 points, giving them a one point lead with two minutes to go. Wilburn Griffith of Queens, New York, sunk a shot to put the Owls up by one.

“The Owls great out of bounds defense led to a tough shot at the end of regulation, leading to the Owls victory,” said Knight.

Hines finished with a game high 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Dix finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Guerrette finished with 15 points, while Duncombe finished with 14 points. Brown came off the bench with 17 points.
