Coach Bill Nemer’s Lady Hornets picked up a couple of big road wins over the past week, knocking off Washburn Monday 39-35 and tripping up Southern Aroostook Friday 52-46. As of yesterday’s latest Heal Point Standings, Ashland was ranked sixth in Eastern Maine Class D.
Monday night the 11-5 Lady Hornets outscored third-seeded Washburn 14-6 in the crucial fourth period on their way to victory. Mindy Chasse paced the winners with 25 points, 13 of them from the free throw line. Whitney Flint added 10 points for the winners.
The Lady Beavers, who led at the end of each of the first three quarters, were paced by Alex Bird, who had 10 points.
On Friday night at Southern Aroostook, the Ashland girls did something that they hadn’t done since 1992 — they defeated a Warrior team in SACS gym. It had been 16 years since the Lady Hornets had swept the Lady Warriors in a regular season.
Again in this game, Ashland used an 18-point fourth quarter surge to overcome the home team. Flint hit a couple huge 3-pointers and scored seven of her 15 points in the final stanza. Solid foul shooting also proved the difference for the Lady Hornets.
Chasse led all scorers with 20 points. For the seventh-seeded Warrior girls, Shana Martin collected 18 points and Kaylea Collier chipped in 14 points. Southern Aroostook won the JV game, 46-23.
The win capped busy week for Ashland, who lost at home to Limestone on Thursday and defeated Easton on Jan. 23.
Against the seventh-seeded Lady Eagles, Ashland could not stop 5-10 pointguard Lauren Redmond who pushed her team to an early lead with 10 of her 18 points in the opening period. The Lady Hornets, who were held to just 18 points in the first three quarters, were led by Chasse with 17 while Suzie Poulin added 10 points in the loss.
Limestone won the prelim game in overtime, 28-26.
At Easton, Nemer got to play his entire bench and called on Poulin to shut down the Lady Bears’ high scorer, Kassie Lovely (five points). Offensively, Chasse (19) and Flint (16) paced the Lady Hornets to a 42-15 victory.
Ashland was slated to host eighth-seeded Katahdin Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and wrap up their regular season Feb. 9 at Limestone/MSSM.
