Cheering competition rescheduled
Due to inclement weather, the Aroostook League Cheering Championships scheduled for last Friday at Caribou High School have been postponed to Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
Teams participating include Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield, Van Buren, Central Aroostook and Houlton. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Learn-to-ski rescheduled
The biathlon portion of the Aroostook Medical Center and Nordic Heritage Sport Club sponsored learn-to-ski week has been rescheduled due to cold for Friday, Feb. 2 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Nordic Heritage Center.
PIHS athlete of the week
The Varsity Club and Big Cheese Pizza are pleased to congratulate Amanda Bruton and Brennen Shaw for being selected as athletes of the week for the week of Jan. 16-20.
Bruton qualified for the state swim meet in the 50-yard freestyle event due to her first-place finish in the event in a swim meet against Hampden Academy. During that same meet, she finished first in the 100-yard freestyle as well as the 200-yard individual medley.
Shaw netted the winning goal in overtime against John Bapst to lead the ice hockey team to an important win. His game-winning goal capped off a week where he also scored two goals and had two assists in a victory over Foxcroft Academy.
Student athletes chosen as athletes of the week receive a one-item, large pizza courtesy of Big Cheese Pizza.
MWSC upcoming events
With snow on the ground the clubs of the Maine Winter Sports Center are becoming more and more active. The following is a list of events scheduled for the coming month.
Feb. 4: 5K freestyle Big Rock Downhill Dash at Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill.
Feb. 10: Sam Ouellette Ski Marathon featuring an 8K junior race and 40K and 80K adult races.
Feb. 11: Karen Sprague Memorial ace featuring classical spring relays and a skiathlon.
Feb. 18: Henry Anderson Ski Dag in Caribou featuring an 8K classical race.

Snowmobile ride with Andy Santerre
The third annual snowmobile ride featuring 2002-2005 Busch North Series Champion Andy Santerre is slated for Saturday, Feb. 10 starting at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center.
This year’s charity ride, dinner and auction benefit the AMHC Sexual Assault Services program and is sponsored by AMHC, Clukey’s Auto, Value Parts Stores and County Sports Polaris. The day-long activity schedule begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration and sign-in at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center poolside. The ride begins at 10 a.m. and Santerre will be available for autographs and a social gathering at 4:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 in the main banquet room. The auction commences at 7 p.m.
A donation of $50 gets participants in to both the ride and the dinner/auction or choose one event for $25. Organizers recommend an early sign-up as last year’s event sold out.

Sled dog race seeks volunteers
The Board of Directors of the Can-Am Crown Sled Dog Races is seeking volunteers for a number of races positions for the 15th annual Can-Am Sled Dog Races to be held the first weekend of March 2007.
Volunteers are needed as/for: host families, medics, trail crews, trail surveyors, judges, judge assistants, timekeepers, gear checkers, handlers, Can-Am Central, security, communications, souvenir sales, crossing guards, cooks, transportation, start set-up, and more.
