Lady Wildcats second in three meets

   FORT KENT, Maine – The Fort Kent girls’ varsity ski team picked up three wins in county championship meets over the last week. The Lady Warriors earned a 23-29 victory over Presque Isle in the giant slalom event, a 20-33 win over Presque Isle in the slalom event and a 17-45 win over Presque Isle in the 5K Classical meet.

     In giant slalom Fort Kent took three of the top-five positions on their home snow Saturday, just barely getting past the Lady Wildcats, who placed three skiers in the top-10.
Central Aroostook earned the third team spot with 37 points followed by Madawaska with 56, Caribou with 93 and Fort Fairfield with 96.
Individually, Central Aroostook’s Brooke Smith grabbed the top spot with a two-run combined timed of one minute and 46.05 seconds. Jen Steeves of Presque Isle took second with a time of 1:51.09 followed by Justine Cyr, Ali Charette and Samantha Landry, all of Fort Kent, at 1:52.06, 1:53.19 and 1:53.67, respectively.
Rounding out the top-10 were Kristena McKenney of Presque Isle at 1:54.63; Page Findlen of Central Aroostook at 1:56.72; Desiree Dionne of Madawaska at 1:57.48; Amber Griffin of Presque Isle at 1:58.08; and Nicole McQuade of Central Aroostook at 1:58.28.

In slalom, Presque Isle and Central Aroostook broke up the Fort Kent pack a bit but not enough to get past the Lady Warriors. The team placed four skiers in the top-10 for the win.
Central Aroostook took third in the event with a team score of 34 followed by Madawaska at 57, Caribou and Fort Fairfield at 92.
Leading the way individually was Fort Kent’s Ali Charette with a two-run combined time of 1:31.72. Presque Isle’s Jen Steeves took second at 1:32.78 and was followed by Brooke Smith of Central Aroostook at 1:33.89; Justine Cyr and Lyndsay Stanley, both of Fort Kent at 1:34.50 and 1:39.24, respectively.
Rounding out the top-10 were Nicole Mcquade of Central Aroostook at 1:41.19; Kristena McKenney of Presque Isle at 1:45.51; Page Findlen of Central Aroostook at 1:47.24; Amber Griffin of Presque Isle at 1:47.50; and Bailey LeBeouf of Fort Kent at 1:47.94.

Fort Kent and Presque Isle battled for the top cross-country skiing spots Thursday in Caribou. Facing stinging winds and brutally cold temperatures, competitors sliced through the trails just before sundown.
Fort Fairfield’s Hilary McNamee led the way individually with a time of 22:21. Her win helped the Lady Tigers tie Caribou for third with 49 points. Van Buren finished fifth with 93 points. Skiers from Madawaska and Central Aroostook also took part.
Grace Boutot of Fort Kent led the first Fort Kent surge, taking second with a time of 23:14. She was followed by teammates Kaitlyn Bernard and Jessica Caron at 23:29 and 23:56, respectively. Caribou’s Lindsay Cote earned the fifth spot with a time of 24:33.
Rounding out the top-10 were Rose-Mary Williams of Fort Fairfield at 25:25; Kristina Stephens of Caribou at 25:33; Justine Cyr of Fort Kent at 26:26; Erin Thomas of Presque Isle at 26:32; and Hallie Bartlett of Presque Isle at 27:06.
