Owning a pet can be costly venture

This week is going to be dangerously cold, so keep your critters warm and safe. Of course, Mother Nature gave us a wonderful little look at what is yet to come; it was a beautiful weekend last weekend. I sure do hope that you got outside with your dog. I took my dogs for two long walks this past weekend. It was great. I think that dogs give us the gift of wanting to get up off the couch and go walking. I had one man tell me, “I have to adopt a dog, because people are starting to look at me funny when I go walking and talk to myself.” It is definitely no healthier for your dog to be overweight than it is for us. So let’s face it, having a dog is a win-win situation.
Dogs give us so much and they ask for little in return. Does that mean that owning a pet is not expensive? Oh ya, it certainly can be, if you do it right. There is a lot to consider: health, exercise, medical attention, vaccinations, grooming, nutrition, and what to do with your dog when you need to go out of town. Doing all that right does cost money. Having a pet forces us to put another life first. I honestly enjoy buying things for my animals and I also enjoy taking them new places and showing them off. They are a huge part of my life, true members of the family.
Have you ever considered becoming a member of the board of directors of the Central Aroostook Humane Society? Honestly, it is a great group of people, working hard to make the lives of the animals of Aroostook County better. You will see our smiling faces at various fund-raisers and events. We are always looking for fresh ideas and new members. To become a member, you must fill out an application, the board will review it, and we will go from there. If you are interested, please go to our Web site, www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org and e-mail us a request for an application.
If you are looking for a friend for life, please come and visit us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We are open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, or give us a call at 764-3441. If your group would like someone from the shelter to speak and do a brief presentation regarding the shelter, please give the shelter a call.
Don’t forget “Story Time with the Animals” March 17 at the shelter at 10 a.m. We offer a story, a snack, visit with the animals and the grand tour of the shelter. Hope to see you there. Please have your pets spayed or neutered. If they already are, please consider making a donation toward our spay and neuter program. Every donation counts!
