Carnival, Field Days events

The Easton Recreational Department’s Annual Winter Carnival will take place Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17. On Friday evening, there will be a family open gym and game night. Tables will also be set up for those ladies who would like to scrapbook. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Saturday there will be a sliding party at Kinney Hill from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Kiwanis will be on hand to sell concessions and Traci Halvorson will have her sled dog team there to give a demo and rides. Saturday at 6 p.m. we will host a potluck supper at the elementary school cafeteria. Please bring a dish to share with the group. Drinks and place settings will be provided. The after dinner entertainment will be provided by the girls and boys junior high basketball teams as they take on their parents.
The Easton Field Days Committee is seeking a sponsor or sponsors who may be willing to help fund their annual fireworks show. This show has been a great addition to our annual festival but is an expensive one to provide. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. The committee is also looking for a group who might be interested in taking over and organizing the annual sunrise breakfast. The Easton Methodist Church has taken on this project for many years and has decided it is time for them to step down. If there is a group in town who may be interested in taking on this fund-raiser, please call the Town Office at 488-6652.

Organizations

The Easton Kiwanis Club met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, March 6, with 10 present in spite of the wind and cold weather. A chicken pot pie and green salad and biscuits were served for the supper. President Harold Clark opened the meeting with prayer by Keith Richardson and the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Happy Dollars were called for, with three responding. It was voted to supply food for the Rec Department’s Winter Carnival, which will be hotdogs, rolls, drinks and desserts, cooked up and served by the Kiwanis Club. The Winter Carnival will be held on Kinney Hill, on  Route 1A on Saturday, March 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. As there was no other items on the agenda, the meeting closed early. Those present were: Barbara Blackstone, Hillary Trainer, Michelle Osgood, Ann Osgood, Esther and Keith Richardson, Clair and Eldora Carter, Harold Clark and Bernard Hussey.
The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens Club met on Thursday, March 8, with nine members in attendance to enjoy the delicious potluck luncheon. Assistant President Joanne Johnson led the meeting  with the salute to the flag and singing of “America,” with Vera Cullins at the piano. In the absence of the secretary, Dottie Beaton, there were no minutes to be read. Treasurer Lindy Fowler reported that the treasury stands as read for last week, with one or two bills to be paid. She also called the roll with those present being: Avis Hume, Glenice Craig, Joanne Johnson, Edith Fuller, Eldora and Clair Carter, Vera Cullins, Ailene Embleton and Lindy Fowler.
A thank-you card was read from the Easton Pine Tree Baptist Church for the donation in memory of Geraldine Corey. They also discussed giving a donation in memory of another member, Lucy Allen. It was decided to wait until the next meeting after talking with Lucy’s husband, Frank. The names that have to be put on the Memorial Plaque now are: Helen Todd, Lillian Keirstead, Geraldine Corey, Lucy Allen and Fern Ladner. A thinking-of-you card was signed for Mary Cumming as she has left her apartment in Leisure Village and entered the Presque Isle Nursing Home. There was a suggestion by Joanne that it would be nice if a small parking lot could be built at the back door of the recreation room so that some who cannot walk too far might be able to attend events held there. It was suggested that Glenice Craig bring that idea up at the next meeting of the board.
The up and coming trip for a dinner out in April was discussed with several names of restaurants brought up before the group. No decision has been made yet. There was also discussion on wearing an Easter bonnet for the meeting just after Easter. There will be a special speaker for the next meeting on March 22. The meeting was adjourned and they played bingo for awhile.

Recreation calendar

Wednesday, March 14 – Junior Activities is a program for children ECP age and younger. They meet at the Odd Fellow’s Hall from 9:30 to 11 a.m. This is a great way for the younger kids to get to interact with children their own age and work off some of that ‘cabin fever’ energy. The Easton Senior Citizens will meet at the recreation room at the West Ridge Manor at 1 p.m. for exercise group. Be sure to wear a comfortable pair of shoes and dress in layers. Grades 1-6 will meet after school at the Odd Fellow’s Hall to celebrate National Nutrition Month. Chris Finnemore will be on hand from the Cooperative Extension to get us all excited about some new ways we can eat healthy and tasty. Please pick your child up by 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, March 15 – Kindergarten Only! is a new program for our friends in kindergarten. They will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the elementary school gym and cafeteria. This week’s theme will be ‘March: In like a lion, out like a lamb.’  There will also be a  downhill skiing field trip to Big Rock, departing directly after school to go skiing. The cost is $10 and this includes rental and lift ticket. Children must be able to ski on their own to attend this trip; if they cannot, they must have an adult accompany them. They will return to the Odd Fellow’s Hall at 7:30 p.m. for pick-up.
Friday, March 16 – Junior Activities will meet at the Odd Fellow’s Hall from 9:30 to 11 a.m.  The senior citizens group will have a St. Patty’s Day Party at 11 a.m. at the recreation room in the West Ridge Manor. Please bring something ‘green’ to eat and share with the group.
Monday, March 19 – the senior citizens will meet for nutrition class at 11 a.m. at the West Ridge Manor rec room. This week’s topic will be photochemical. We will be making broccoli soup. This is the third week of swimming lessons. We will depart directly after school and return to the Odd Fellow’s Hall around 4:40 p.m.
Tuesday, March 20 – Cross country skiing at the Danny Ferris home. Please remember your skis and boots and we’ll be exploring the trails along the border. Dress warmly. Children should be picked up by 4:30 p.m. at the Ferris home on the Ladner Road.

Sympathy

Three people highly connected to Easton  passed away week before last. Our sympathy goes out to the family of Sharon Gardener who passed away on March 1, at her home in Jensen Beach, Fla., with her loving family with her. Sharon was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 19 months ago. Her brother, Ollie Gardner, of Charlotte, Vt., brought her home last year during Easton Field Days so that she could see her old friends and classmates once more. Sharon lived all of her growing-up years in Easton and graduated from Easton High School. She went on to get her practical nursing license from the Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and then moved to Springfield, Vt., where she started her 41-year nursing career as an operating room nurse. She leaves behind her much loved son, Brett Charlie and his wife, Margaret and grandddaughter, Alex, whom she also loved dearly. Sharon loved her life at Jensen Beach, with the beach, ocean and marine life. She also enjoyed her work at the Martin Memorial Medical Center and her friends she had there. Besides her son and family, she leaves a brother, Fred Gardner and wife, Jane, of Jensen Beach, and their family; and Oliver “Ollie” Gardner and his wife, Gayle, in Charlotte, Vt. A celebration was held on March 5 in Jensen Beach, and another celebration of her life will be celebrated at 4 Seasons Garden Center, in Williston, Vt. Her ashes will be spread on the beach at Stocking Island, Great Exuma, Bahamas, after a private ceremony. Those wishing to remember her may do so by a donation to the Madeline Gardner Care Fund for Children, in care of Kim Hall, Easton School Department, P.O. box 126, Easton, ME 04740.
Also our sympathy goes out to the family of Albert Wright, who passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 2, at his home. Albert was the son of Basil and Alberta Wright and the youngest of 10 children. He graduated from Easton High School in 1972 and then joined the U.S. Army where he served for 18 years, many of those years spent in Korea and Germany. After leaving the service he made his home in Pensacola, Fla. Albert was very close to his brothers and sisters and their families. At the time of his passing he was employed by Wayne/Dalton Co. as a supervisor in the shipping department. He is survived by his brothers: Sonny Doherty, of Elliot Lake, Ontario; Wiley Doherty, of Presque Isle; David Wright, also of Presque Isle; and Robert Wright, of Orono; and their families. He also leaves five sisters: Reta Gustin, of Branford, Conn.; Dixie Langley, of Crestview, Fla.; Ruth Barnes, of Presque Isle; Carol Ann Manson, of Hancock; and Mary Jane Caron, of Orono; and their families. Funeral services were held last Friday, March 9, at the Duncan/Graves Funeral Home in Presque Isle with the Rev. Larry Palmer officiating. Those who wish may donate to a scholarship that will be set up at Easton Jr./Sr. High School, Center Road, Easton, ME 04740
Our sympathy also goes out to the family and friends of Fern Ladner, who passed away at The Aroostook Medical Center, on Friday, March 2. Fern had been in failing health for some time. She was a dedicated mother and much loved by her family. She was a great cook and decorated many cakes for weddings, birthdays and special occasions. She was a quiet woman who had suffered great losses in her life, losing her husband, Earl, at an early age, and losing her oldest son, Earl “Sonny” Ladner, in a truck accident, and also almost losing a grandson in a car rollover on a Halloween night a few years ago. He is still recuperating. She leaves behind her son, Arthur Ladner, Sr. and his family of Presque Isle; Ernest Ladner and his family of Bowdoinham; Randy Ladner and his family; and Archie Ladner – all of Easton. She also leaves daughters: Bonnie Sandoval and family of Pearland, Texas; and Linda Curtis and her family of Arundel. Those who will also sadly miss her are her brothers, Mark and Everett O’Neal, both of Limestone Siding, New Brunswick, Canada. Funeral services were held at the Duncan/Graves Funeral Home with the Rev. Matthew Maxwell and Assistant Pastor Vaughn Martin officiating. Those wishing to give in her memory may do so to the Steve Perry Scholarship Fund, care of Easton High School, Easton, ME 04740.
