PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Strings in spring! The Portland String Quartet will perform Friday, March 23, in Wieden Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Maine’s premiere string quartet consists of Julie Adams, violist; Paul Ross, cellist; Ronald Lantz, violinist; and Stephen Kecskemethy. Coming from musical training at Curtis, Eastman, Indiana, Juilliard, Oberlin and San Francisco State College, the quartet members have been playing together since 1969. In addition to a busy touring schedule throughout the United States, they have performed in major concert halls in Canada, England, Norway, Russia, across the European continent, the Caribbean Islands, South and Central America and Japan.
PSQ is known both for its quality and longevity. For its first dozen years, the quartet was part of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. It was originally formed from the four first chairs of the string section. The four teach as well as play together.
The New York Times has described the group as “a model of experienced ensemble playing.”
In 1986 they were proclaimed “Maine treasures” and awarded honorary doctor of music degrees by Colby College.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and children, and UMPI, NMCC and Sage students are admitted free with a current ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Refreshments will be sold during intermission. For more information, contact Carol Ayoob 768-9462.
