BANGOR, Maine – Does your child know what to do when a fire alarm goes off, the lights go out, a friend is bleeding, or someone needs to call 9-1-1? Children ages 7 to 12 can have fun learning those skills at the fifth annual Camp Red Cross, sponsored by the local Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The weeklong camp will be held Monday, July 16 through Friday, July 20 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor. Ten spaces are still open for this summer’s Camp Red Cross, according to Pine Tree Chapter camp coordinator Hillary Roberts.
“Give your child the opportunity to make a difference and he or she will do just that,” Roberts said. “Camp Red Cross develops the skills, knowledge and teamwork that prepare young people and empower them in an emergency.”
The Camp helps children learn what to do in an emergency, how to get help, and how to make good decisions to keep themselves and others safe.
The Camp’s learning and fun activities include games, training in decision-making, basic aid, an overview of CPR, and team building. “First Responders” will visit and provide information to campers every day, and the boys and girls will create and perform “real life” emergency skits by the end of the camp week.
Camp Red Cross costs $150, and welcomes Camp Bangor scholarships. For more information about the camp, scholarships, or registration, e-mail robertsh@pinetree.redcross.org, or call Hillary Roberts at 941-2903.
