Despite showers, wind and the threat of a thundershower, 42 bikers departed Van Buren Sunday morning toward Caribou as part of the 22nd annual County Cycle Classic, hosted by the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department.
Ryan McDonald of Old Town was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 56 minutes, 39.59 seconds, while Sonya Skoog of Waldo captured the women’s crown with a time of 1:16:16.
Race director Kathy Mazzuchelli, superintendent of the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department, commented that probably the best performance overall was turned in by 12-year-old Tyler Strid of Caribou. The youngster covered the course on an all-terrain bike with a time of 1:43:08. Mazzuchelli noted that hills coming out of Van Buren along U.S. Route 1 create a very challenging course, but Strid pedaled all the way and cruised comfortably across the finish line.
