Fort Fairfield second in baseball tourney

The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department held its annual 10-12 Pee Wee Invitational Baseball Tournament, which started Monday, July 30 and finished on Wednesday, Aug. 1, with Madawaska earning the title of 2007 County champions.

The tourney started with Ashland and Mapleton playing the first game on Monday. Mapleton defeated Ashland to move on to the next round to face Madawaska, who drew the bye in the first round of the tournament. Other games played on Monday were Fort Fairfield defeating Mars Hill, Washburn defeating Van Buren, and Presque Isle defeating Caribou.
The two semifinal games consisted of Fort Fairfield playing Washburn and Madawaska playing Presque Isle.
Fort Fairfield just snuck by Washburn by a score of 8-7, while Madawaska beat Presque Isle by a score of 6-1.
The championship game held last Wednesday was between Madawaska and Fort Fairfield. Madawaska jumped on top of early and kept the lead throughout the game. Corey Nadeau started as pitcher for the Madawaska squad and pitched three strong innings, giving up only one run.
Madawaska’s defense was tremendous, turning two triple plays in the game. The first triple play was a line shot to second base with runners on first and second base. The second baseman then threw the ball to first base, with the first baseman then catching the runner off second.
The second triple play came in the fourth inning when Fort Fairfield again had runners on first and second. Andrew Tuck lined to the pitcher who then turned the 1-6-3 triple play.
Sam Cyr, Aaron Thibeault, Darin Jandreau and Kyle Blanchette all scored two runs for the winners.  Lenny Pelletier, Corey Nadeau and Sharon Blanchette each scored a run in the 11-5 victory.
Fort Fairfield’s starting pitcher, Landon Towle, pitched into the fourth inning and surrendered seven earned runs. Austin Bernier relieved Towle in the fourth and pitched the rest of the game, giving up four runs.
Austin Bernier scored twice and Tyler Churchill, Towle and Seth Lockhart scored one run apiece for Fort Fairfield.
