The boys and girls varsity soccer teams at Houlton are both desperately hanging on to their top 10 rankings as the playoffs continue to creep closer.
Both Houlton teams are looking to win their final game of the season in order to lock up a preliminary game in the playoffs. The girls’ team is very happy with their season and confident that they can make an impact in the playoffs this year.
“The only thing that a coach can ask for is that their team comes ready to compete every game … and I think we’ve done that,” said second-year coach Tim Tweedie.
Tweedie is looking to firmly secure his second straight preliminary appearance as a varsity coach. He has made a few slight changes to his starting roster late in the season and is a sure believer that anything can happen in the postseason.
“As our boys’ team proved last October, anything can happen once you get into the playoffs.” explained Tweedie.
Last year the Shires boys turned the playoff bracket upside-down by upsetting the number-eight and first-ranked teams in their conference. For this year’s boys team it has been a roller coaster of a season, with them grasping onto hopes of sneaking into the playoffs once again.
“Harvest killed us this year.” said boys’ coach Todd Willard. “Last year, we had a big group of seniors and Jordan [Gard] bailed us out when we needed a big goal. I’m still waiting to see who that will be this year.”
The boys’ team lost two playoff-clinching games over the harvest break against Calais and Schenck high schools, both of whom Houlton had beaten earlier in the season.
The boys need to win or tie their final game against Fort Kent in order to assure a spot in the playoffs. With a loss they could possibly fall out of the top 11 teams and miss the postseason all together.
The girls’ team, while still on the bubble, has nearly assured their spot in the playoffs with a few recent wins.
Both teams play their final game of the season tomorrow night at Houlton against Fort Kent. The girls play at 4 p.m., while the boys kick off at 6 p.m.
