Bond issues focus of Rotary discussion

Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning at the Aroostook Health Center. Special speakers  were: Donald Zillman – president of UMPI, Rachel Rice – media relations coordinator at UMPI, and Jason Parent – director of development and college relations at NMCC.

They spoke about the upcoming bond issues and told of the impact that passage of Bond 3 will have on the three campuses.
UMPI and UMFK would each receive $1.4 million. UMPI would utilize the funds for renovations at Folsom/Pullen Hall, the main classroom and laboratory building on campus. The improvements would greatly increase the energy efficiency in the 50-year-old building.
UMFK would utilize the funds to construct new classrooms and offices. The campus has seen enrollment increase more than 50 percent since 2003.
NMCC would receive $758,000 and use the funds for renovations in the Mailman Trades Building and A. K. Christie Complex. The project will incorporate upgrades to the heating and ventilation systems to aid energy efficiency.
Bond issue 2 will impact the research and economic development in Maine by making funds available for research grants for projects related to advancing Maine’s economy.
They urge voters to get out to the polls and hope that county folks will support the local campuses by passing both Bonds 2 and 3.
