HOULTON, Maine — Sixty-three students were inducted into the Jobs for Maine’s Grads (JMG) program at Houlton High School during a special ceremony last Tuesday night.
The ceremony opened with comments from Dee Butler, job specialist with the Houlton JMG program, who talked about the difference JMG can make in students’ careers and community.
“I firmly believe in making the school-community connection,” said Butler.
Students involved in JMG complete a required 15 hours of community service and also participate in various job shadowing or internship opportunities.
The experience students receive in JMG can make a life-long difference, said guest speaker Rep. Richard Cleary.
“The training students get in JMG will help them fill Maine’s jobs … and learn how to be leaders,” he said.
“You’re about to receive a unique opportunity to advance your careers,” he told the inductees.
Cleary went on to give the students advice for the future, explaining some of the tools they’d need to be successful: integrity and respect, opportunity (know which to take and which to pass on), work ethic and goals.
“A job is not your ultimate goal,” he said. “It’s to enjoy the work you do and to provide for your family and community.”
After Cleary concluded his remarks, officers Amanda Graham, Amber Flewelling, Monica Clark and Emily Gendron explained the four career association goals: leadership development, career preparation, community service and social awareness.
Tom Hart, regional manager for JMG, then installed the members and officers and certificates were presented by Hart, Butler and Houlton JMG President Scott Anderson. Courtney McLaughlin and Amber Hyman led members in the career association creed before Anderson offered the evening’s closing remarks.
Members of the JMG program at Houlton for 2007-2008 include: Scott Anderson, Amanda Graham, Josh Beals, Sebastian Berry, Parker Brown, Sara Corey, Josh Drew, Brittany Guiod, Tara Lawlor, Haley Nickerson, Landon York, Abe Carmichael, Zach Chase, Ronnie Farwell, David Flint, Brittany Hill, Casey Malone, Ashlee McClure, Amanda Fogarty, Megan Norton and Justin Smith.
