PRESQUE ISLE – Artist Frederick Lynch, whose work already is included in two collections at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, will bring a solo exhibition to the Reed Art Gallery of his recent and ongoing work entitled “Divisions.” An opening reception for the show will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. His works then will be on display through Jan. 26, 2008.
“Divisions” includes a selection of drawings and paintings that offer a representational glimpse of Lynch’s recent exploration, which according to Sandra Huck, gallery director, “is based on the idea that repeated sectoring of a given area can produce infinite shape variations.”
“I have found that living with some of the images for a short period of time now has allowed me to appreciate his careful consideration of color contrasts and compliments along with the construction and the divisions of the painting,” Huck said. “Frederick Lynch is in full control of his canvas. His exhaustive attention keeps each canvas fresh; it is what keeps the viewer coming back for more.”
Lynch received his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and his master’s of education degree from Westfield State College in Westfield, Mass. He has done post-graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts; Instituto de Allende, Mexico; and the Massachusetts and Maine Colleges of Art. He has taught at the University of Southern Maine, Colby College and the Haystack School of Crafts on Deer Isle. He has participated in group and solo exhibitions since 1997. His work is in the collections of the Portland Museum of Art, the De Cordova Museum, Farnsworth Art Museum, Little Rock Art Center, Bank of New Hampshire and the University of Southern Maine.
The public is invited to view Lynch’s show and attend his reception. Refreshments will be served. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Saturday. The gallery is closed Sundays and university holidays.
