WINTER CONCERT — Houlton Community Chorus, which includes the members pictured here, is preparing for their holiday concerts on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. at the Houlton United Methodist Church. Cost is $4 per person. All are welcome to come here a selection of seasonal, spiritual and classical music under the direction of Gary Johnson and with accompaniment by Amy Webb.
The concert will feature an opening segment of traditional music of America, and will close with a holiday presentation of familiar Christmas music. The members of the chorus have come from much of the southern Aroostook area, and have been rehearsing weekly since late summer to prepare a joy-filled and pleasurable concert for the area.
Music director for this concert, Dr. Gary Johnson, said, “We have been challenged by the music of the 20th century composer, Randall Thompson; enjoyed the sounds and rhythms of some familiar pieces; and inspired with the recent music of Ken Medema and Mark Lowry. We have enjoyed getting ready for the concerts, and believe that listeners will appreciate this season’s concert.”
The Houlton Area Community Chorus is a participant in the area’s excellent fine arts program. Made up of volunteer musicians from youth and adults, the chorus presents two concerts each year.
Arlene Bean is the current president of the association, which oversees the development of the chorus. Rehearsals are open to any person willing to commit to the preparation for community concerts. Rehearsals for the spring concert will be announced later this winter.
