Recognizing Hospice volunteers

To the editor:
In honor of National Hospice month I would like to recognize a unique group of people. They are caring, compassionate Hospice Volunteers who are willing to run errands, hold a hand, sit quietly, help at any hour, and most importantly … be a support to a terminally ill patient and their loved ones.
The outstanding success of Hospice of Aroostook is but a reflection of the ever-increasing dedication and enthusiasm our volunteers display. I could not allow the year 2007 to end without recognizing their very generous efforts.
Hospice of Aroostook Volunteers have participated with Health Fairs from Fort Kent to Houlton, provided patient and family care, helped with fund-raising at the Golf Classic, made Memory Quilts and “Sweet Dreams” pillow cases, provided office support with all sorts of tasks including beautiful bereavement follow up with bereaved caregivers, mailings and more mailings, Internet research, being a guest presenter at trainings, doing interviews to advocate for hospice care and always being a phenomenal person who is willing to give of their precious time and hearts.
At this time I would like to welcome nine new Hospice of Aroostook volunteers to the program. They have successfully completed the extensive 30-hour training this fall: Constance Barry, Houlton; Cheryl Clayton, Caribou; Camilla Drew, Dyer Brook; Barbara Knapp, Cary Plantation; Carolyn Kelley, Caribou; Nancy Hersey, Woodland; Sharon Lowrey, Houlton; Ronald Ouellette, Houlton; and Nancy Saucier, Caribou.
The training would not have been successful with out the several community members who generously volunteer their time to be a guest speaker. They are willing to share their time and knowledge on topics such as the Legal Aspects about death and dying, Spiritual Concepts, Funeral Arrangements, Family Dynamics, Pain and Symptom Management, Safety, Telemedicine, and Communication Skills. Their support to Hospice of Aroostook is truly appreciated!
I am grateful for this opportunity to share a very sincere and heartfelt “Thank You” to all of the Hospice of Aroostook Volunteers. I look forward to the volunteer opportunities in 2008.
