Contest winners
Congratulations to the Mars Hill Town Office and F.A. Peabody for winning the Winterfest’s Light Up The Town contest. The Mars Hill Town Office was the large business winner, with the Bear Paw Inn coming in second and Katahdin Trust coming in third. F.A. Peabody won for the small business division, with Dead River Oil Company coming in second and Smith Truck Brokerage coming in third. Thank you to all the businesses that participate in this – everyone living in or passing through town is the true winner as we get the enjoyment of seeing the town with lights aglow!
Central Aroostook Snowmobile Club
The CASC will meet on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m. for a potluck dinner with meeting to follow at 6:30 p.m. at the clubhouse in Mars Hill. Plans are to discuss the upcoming snowmobile races at Big Rock.
Christmas Melodies Singspiration
The East Ridge Union Church of Mars Hill invites everyone to a Christmas Melodies Singspiration on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m. Featured singers will include East Ridge special singers and friends, Julie Shaw, Stan Harris, Gail Watson, Eric and Marla Mean, the Kinney Trio, local 4H kids and the Calvin Shaw family.
All are welcome to enjoy the music and refreshments to follow. This will be a wonderful event to enjoy to mark the true reason we celebrate Christmas.
All Aroostook singers
Congratulations to the following Central Aroostook Junior Senior High School students for making the All Aroostook Chorus for this year.
Making the grade for the junior high portion are: Shannon Todd, Tiffany York, Olivia Cyr, Whitney Klein, Landon Jackins, Steven Decker, Bryce McClay, Anthony Brock, Patricia Donovan, Mariah Brewer, Lindsey Watson and Robert McKenzie. Two other students who will also represent Central Aroostook Junior High School are Taylor Otis, of Limestone, and Morgan Johnson, of Van Buren. They have recently relocated but had been members of the CAJHS Chorus prior to their moves.
Representing the high school are: Olivia Grow, Leanne Grass, Rachel Donovan, Jeanette Hallett, Megan McClay, Aryn Bernier, Miranda Lento, Danielle Cropley, Nate Donovan, Zach Amnott and Brian Faulkner.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning at the Aroostook Health Center. The club has received a newer popcorn machine for use at the high school basketball games. A special thanks to Cushman’s Embroidery for their generous donation!
A special presentation was made to Andy McQuade of the Mars Hill Country Club. The Rotary Club made a donation of $300 to purchase golf equipment for the Junior Golf program, which is in its fifth year. This program runs from 5 – 6 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Country Club. This program is for students from 5 to 12 years of age. There were 25 to 30 kids that attended the first year. Some of those first-year students are now on the high school golf team. The lessons are led by Tim Carlson, with assistance from some of the high school golfers.
Elementary concert
The band and chorus from Fort Street Elementary School will present a holiday concert for all those interested in attending. The concert will be held at the Central Aroostook High School Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13.

Book Club
The Tuesday Book Club has selected “The Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver as its current reading selection. The voices of four sisters and their mother tell the story of their lives in the Congo from 1959 – 1998. All are caught in Reverend Nathan Price’s determination to “enlighten the savages and rule his family with strict biblical sanctions” in a remote village of the Congo.
The Tuesday Book Club will meet next on Dec. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library. All are welcome as we continue to take turns making book selections. For more information, please contact Rita Kingsbury at 429-9359.
Reading hour
There will be a Reading Hour for children ages third grade and up on Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. The first book will be “Goosed” by Bill Wallace. This program will run every Thursday at the library.
Book sale
The Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library is having a book sale. Cost for the books is .50 for hard covers and .25 for paperbacks. There are also bags available to fill for $5.
Old and new copyrights for adult and children are available. Fiction, nonfiction, westerns, science fiction, romance are among those currently on hand. There are also children’s books for sale, so plan to stop and check things out. Stock up now for your winter reading! Monetary donations will also be accepted.
Community Cupboard change
Due to Christmas falling after the regularly scheduled second distribution date in the month, the date will be changed to Dec. 18. The cupboard is open from 6 -8 p.m.
The cupboard’s usual distribution dates and times are the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. The second Tuesday is open from 1 – 3 p.m.; the fourth Tuesday is open from 6 – 8 p.m. The cupboard services the towns of Easton, Westfield, Mars Hill, Blaine and Bridgewater. BHA Book Sale
Would you like to give something special this Christmas? How about a copy of “The History of Bridgewater?” To raise money for their sesquicentennial events, the Bridgewater Historical Association has copies of the book, “The History of Bridgewater,” by Annie Rideout, for sale. The book has a hard cover and sells for $35 each ($29 plus $6 S/H). To avoid the shipping costs, books can be picked up at a BHA meeting.
During the winter, the BHA meets the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Center on Main Street in Bridgewater. Only prepaid orders will be accepted. Ladies’ Stitch and *itch Group
The Bridgewater Recreation Department has formed a Ladies’ Stitch & *itch Group. The group meets every other Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Civic Building. Ladies of all ages are invited to attend. There is no charge to attend. The group will meet on Dec. 18.
This is an opportunity to bring whatever you are working on: cross-stitch, embroidery, scrapbooking, sewing, etc., and share good conversation while working on your favorite project. If you do not have anything to bring, that’s OK too, as others will be willing share and teach.
