CHRISTMAS SPIRIT – Evelyn Dunphy of Island Falls displays but a portion of the yearly goody packages, which she puts together for neighbors in need, ready for delivery.
Her husband, Bob Dunphy, explains that she sends out the packages to “everybody that needs” – anyone who has lost a loved one during the year, elderly neighbors on their own, or anyone else who has otherwise had a hard year.
This year, Dunphy will be sending out somewhere between 75 and 80 packages to families and individuals – most local, but others will be mailed out. Each package holds 14 separate items, including banana bread, popcorn balls, and cookies, among the many other treats. Dunphy also knits special items like prayer shawls for some of her neighbors in need.
According to Bob Dunphy, his wife begins cooking and planning for this extraordinary project on November 1 or earlier. And she shows no signs of slowing down, every year she asks her daughters Cindy and Lori if they know of anyone in need who could benefit from a “holiday goody package with love.”
