“Some injuries slowed us down,” said SACS coach Tim Toothaker. “We had to change our plans somewhat from attacking fast to more conservative play.”
The Warriors saw an 11-5 lead turn into a 21-all halftime tie, and the game remained knotted at 37-all after the third, as well.
“We got into foul trouble early, so we again that changed what we originally wanted to do,” Toothaker explained.
The Warriors edged ahead of the Beavers in the final quarter to hold on for the win.
“Our bench players stepped up in the latter part of the fourth period defensively,” Toothaker said. “We had some key steals, which made the difference.”
Mike Casey led all scorers with a game-high 16 points, while Rob Toothaker netted 15 more for the Warriors. For Washburn, Connor Fitzpatrick, who has roots in Houlton, scored 14 points.
The Warriors know their schedule will continue to challenge them.
“We are working well together,” said Toothaker. “We just need to get healthy again.”
